Application Deadline April 10, 2024

Who are we?

On June 14th, 2021, we lost a piece of our family, our beloved Adam Hobbs, who took his life after his battles with mental health.

The impact of Adam’s death was felt throughout the community. Adam was well known, especially in the hockey community. He played hockey in Abbotsford from 5 years old, until he passed away at the young age of 22. Adam also played competative lacrosse, rugby, and was known to enjoy a leisure game of golf. He developed many relationships throughout the sports community, it was one of his major passions.

There was a certain sense of confusion when we found out Adam had passed. The people close to him knew him as a fun, goofy, heartfelt young man who was always there to lend a hand. The reality is mental health is very far from understood. For that reason, the 4 of us have created the Big Red Mental Health Society. Dedicating our efforts to educate others of the importance of mental health, as well as providing an opportunity for our family, friends, and community to heal.

Our purpose is not only to honour Adam’s life, but to also promote and support the importance of mental health education and awareness within the Fraser Valley. We aim to highlight healthy lifestyles and positivity around seeking help, such as counseling and other support systems available. Our goals are to create awareness, acceptance, support, and overall comfort for those impacted by depression, anxiety, PTSD, and or suicidal thoughts.

We aim to help end the stigma mental health is surrounded by and create a conversation within our community by hosting events such as our Drive to Thrive for Mental Health Golf Tournament. Through these events we will support local foundations/charities that focus on mental health initiatives. Depression and anxiety are not a weakness and with the proper support, we stive to reduce the number of suicides amongst men and others.

Sincerely,

The Big Red Mental Health Society
